When the small speed boat carrying them did not yield to the large, on-coming ferry boat in the Bosphorus Straight separating European and Asian Istanbul, nine passengers and crew, including an American couple, were nearly crushed.
"Get the *&?! out of the way," exclaimed the American woman, Katie Hart, in the heat of the moment.
Another passenger retrieved her Koran from her handbag and prayed as the enormous ferry bore down on them.
"I would say it came within ten feet," said Ms Hart's husband, Timothy Hart.
"More like four or five," added Ms Hart.
Mr Hart noted that may be an exaggeration.
"Whatever, it was scary," Ms Hart continued. On that count, all passengers, including the crew, agreed.
Officials determined both captains were in error. This was little comfort to the alarmed passengers of the smaller craft who watched with some trepidation as the captains turned into, rather than away from, each other.
"At that point, the crest of the larger boat began pulling us in like a tractor beam," explained Ms. Hart.
"That's when I stood up and yelled, 'You're turning the wrong way!'" said Mr Hart. Those present were already acutely aware of this unfortunate fact.
